Dan Siegler composed an original score for String Noise, the husband and wife violin duo of Pauline Kim Harris and Conrad Harris, which was performed on January 29, 2015 at Roulette in Brooklyn, NY.
In separate recorded interviews, the duo were asked the same questions, but did not hear their partners answers until the night of the performance. Analog synthesizer-generated white noise served as underpinning for the score. The violins were performed live, with passages of unison, as well as sections where notes were dropped or added by one player, serving as a musical metaphor for challenges inherent in matrimonial ideals. Vocalizing and disjointed, non-linear lyrics were mixed in hinting at the idea of narrative context. The element of surprise played a key role in this piece and affected the performers and audience in unforeseen ways.
